Kompanio Powers 5G Tablets

MediaTek has added a new brand to its portfolio by introducing two tablet processors, refreshing its Arm compute strategy by reusing its latest Dimensity smartphone chips. The new lineup comprises five parts: the Kompanio 500, 820, 900T, 1200, and 1300T. Each is based on a smartphone counterpart with almost identical hardware. Only the 900T and 1300T are available now, however, and they’re slated solely for tablets, thus the ‘T’ suffix.

Targeting the high-end market, the Kompanio 1300T derives from MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200. It employs the same CPU arrangement: four Cortex-A78s and four Cortex-A55s. The D1200 has a 3GHz “prime” core, three 2.6GHz “big” cores, and four 2GHz “small” cores. But the company withheld the frequencies and, therefore, performance. We expect it will boost the frequencies for greater CPU performance in the larger tablet form factor.

The Kompanio 900T is nearly identical to the Dimensity 900. MediaTek targets the former, a tablet chip, at the mid-premium segment. It has two 2.4GHz A78s and six 2GHz A55s. The K900T uses four Mali-G68 cores to render graphics. Unlike the K1300T, it features a lower maximum resolution (2,000x1,200) than its Dimensity counterpart.

In the high-end segment, the Kompanio 1300T competes against the Snapdragon 8cx. The Qualcomm product has four Cortex-A76s running at up to 3.15GHz and four Cortex-A55s at up to 2.0GHz. With its newer Arm cores, the 1300T should lead Snapdragon in multicore performance, assuming a peak frequency of at least 2.3GHz.
